Choosing a Camera for Snapshots

I often get asked to recommend a digital camera. No one camera is right for everyone. However, in finding the camera that is right for you, I often find I have similar recommendations.

  1. Most point and shoot cameras will produce images that are fine for 4x6 prints and sharing on the web. More mega-pixels and better lenses will give you greater quality and flexibility, but most people don’t need it.
  2. Determine what features are right for you:
  • Cost
  • Size
  • Zoom
  • Gather information about available models:
    • Look at a camera review site like Digital Photography Review
    • Go to a local retailer and handle the models you are thinking about
  • Decide what buying option is right for you:
    • Buying online at placed like B&H Photo or Adorama can provide cost savings
    • Local camera shops may have higher service levels if that is important to you
    • Most people will be more satisfied with a new camera. Generally each new generation of digital cameras has significant improvements over the last
